Einführend werden Informationen über den Autor, sein Leben und Wirken angeführt. Da der Roman zu Sturm und Drang gehört, wird auch diese Epoche dargestellt und der Begriff des Genies als Leitidee der damaligen literarischen Produktion erklärt.
