Sažetak | In the introductory part the basic purpose of the paper is presented, which is elaborated in the main body of the paper. At the beginning of the main body technical modes of translating – subtitling – the movie Rock ‘n’ Roll High School are explained in detail with the purpose of familiarizing the reader with the norms a translator is obliged to observe. Further in the main body, basic terminology and regularities regarding the process of translation, with a special emphasis on subtitling, are explained. Those include terms such as adequacy, equivalence, loss and gain, specification and generalization, context, but also translation studies and its connection to linguistics, semiotics, semantics, history, culture, etc. The importance of all the terminology is described in detail and exemplified on the above mentioned movie template. The relevance of context was reflected in numerous ways; when the translator was unable to find an adequate solution, context was the only resource to resort to. One of the dominant features, with regard to subtitling of the movie was its genre – teenage music comedy – which sometimes alleviated, but sometimes made potential difficulties encountered when translating humour and irony, metaphors, idioms and songs more difficult. Translating humour and irony is one of the aspects of translation that is highly context – based, and it is provided and exemplified in the paper. Special attention is paid to translating poetry when subtitling as it is considered to be one of the most challenging and demanding tasks put for the translator. |
