Since the beginning of time people have had the need to write about the things they are surrounded by. With time, writing stopped being just a way to make the time pass by and became a full-time job. In today’s world, William Shakespeare is considered to be the best writer in the history of humankind, leaving us with great comedies and tragedies, stories of love and hate. However, in the last century and a half the question of Shakespearean authorship has provoked suspicion among many scholars by suggesting that William Shakespeare lacked both education and experience needed to write all the works attributed to him. Because of that two sides emerged: the Stratfordians –who believe that William Shakespeare was indeed the one to write everything the past suggests he wrote, and the Anti-Stratfordians –who believe Shakespeare was a fraud, and that his name was actually a nickname used by someone else, perhaps even a group of writers. Among the Anti-Stratfordians emerged a group called the Oxfordians, who represent an author who gained greatest support among the Anti-Stratfordians, a nobleman called Edward de Vere, the 17th Earl of Oxford. He continues to be the leading opponent of Shakespeare in the entire authorship question. This paper will mainly be dealing with the Stratfordian and the Oxfordian point of view. The Anti-Stratfordian thesis will be mentioned, but not as detailed as the other two since it offers many possible authors, but fails to deliver needed evidence to support their thesis.
