The aim of this paper is to portray the challenges of literary translation, namely the translation of horror fiction. These challenges as well as the strategies for solving them are exemplified through my translation of the short horror story written by Stephen King – “1408”. The theoretical part of the case study includes sections on translation, literary translation and their most important features and challenges, information regarding the horror genre and its popularity, and the most important facts about Stephen King and his short story “1408”. The practical part contains the analysis of my translation of the short horror story. The analysis is divided into three parts: the linguistic aspect, cultural aspect, and literary aspect. The linguistic aspect deals with issues at the level of grammar due to the differences between the source language (SL) and target language (TL). This includes the analysis of translation shifts, idiomatic expressions, and phrasal verbs. The second aspect explores differences at the level of culture-specific items that are characteristic of SL and TL. The analysis is based on the strategies coined by translation scholars and utilised in the process of translation. The literary aspect of the analysis is concerned with metaphors in the short story and their translation, namely those depicting movement, colour symbolism, and images of terror and disgust which are a prominent feature of the works of Stephen King. The latter portrays my decision-making process while translating and considering the strategies mentioned while analysing the examples of the first two aspects.
