Abstract
U radu se obrađuje djelovanje Umberta Ecoa kao semiotičara i književnika. Daje se kratak uvid u semiotiku 20. stoljeća nakon pojave Ferdinanda de Saussurea i strukturalizma. Umberto se Eco smješta u taj kontekst te se ukratko objašnjavaju karakteristike njegove semiotike. Budući da se rad bazira na semiotici pripovjednog teksta, objašnjen je pojam naratologije te njezina uloga u 20. stoljeću u kojem prevladavaju pripovjedni tekstovi. Zatim se daje pregled nekih Ecovih radova u kojima se obrađuju odnosi čitatelja i autora, moguće interpretacije pripovjednih tekstova, tehnike pripovijedanja itd. Analiziran je i roman Ime ruže u kojem Eco vješto primjenjuje svoje teorijske radove. Pri analizi romana upotrijebljeni su i neki zapisi samoga Ecoa o navedenom romanu. Poseban je naglasak stavljen na pripovjedača, makropozicije, žanr te na sami kontekst postmoderne u kojem je roman nastao. Rad je zaključen isticanjem značenja Umberta Ecoa kao semiotičara te najavom projekta o izdavanju skraćene i pojednostavljene verzije romana Ime ruže.
