Ever since man found himself to be within the world he has been trying to fathom its precognised fullness. Man's inability to comprehend the phenomenon which is the world instigates restlessness and yearning to adequately think the entire scope of the in-world phenomena. To get nearer to the truth of the subject that is to be known, humankind produced an array of philosophical systems out of which many have their representatives, founders and schools. The teachings of Advaita vedānta and that of Buddha are two such systems of thought. Teachings of Advaita vedānta are both interpretationally and in thought based on the Upanishads while Buddha's teaching is uniquely his own as per realisations he obtained through meditative insight. Upanishadic teachings and Buddha's insight both advocate non-separateness of phenomena and absolute unity – a realisation which marks the end of human suffering, the end of ignorance and the end of perpetual cycles of rebirth. The philosophy of Advaita vedānta suggests that the notion of subject and object being separated from each other lies in states of our consciousness which is given to us as fourfold, namely through states of wakefulness, sleep, dreamless sleep and pure intuitive consciousness which is absolute as such and which represents the notion of the absolute by the following terms: brahman, ānanda and ātman. Moreover, from the viewpoint of Buddha's teaching which stems from universal human experience – the experience of suffering, the understanding of the Four Dharma Seals and the Four Noble Truths comes to the forefront along with teachings of karma as the active principle and samsāra as the cycle of repeated incarnations which need to be terminated by stepping into nirvāna in which everything is known as the absolute. By knowing the absolute as the singularity of all phenomena, the Buddha and Upanishads confirm the possibility of the human condition being pacified while charting the path to self-realisation in knowing the absolute in which everything is one, in which everything is permeated by peace.
