Abstract
The American Dream started as a Puritan dream that they brought with them to the New World and developed into the belief that material prosperity is the criterion for success. This master’s thesis analyzes the representation of the American Dream in two modern American novels. The selected novels The Great Gatsby by Francis Scott Fitzgerald (1925) and Invisible Man (1952) by Ralph Ellison depict the American Dream in different social and racial contexts. The Great Gatsby shows the period of the... More Roaring Twenties in New York and the consumerist society of that period. Invisible Man, on the other hand, depicts America in the 1930s and 1940s in which an African American narrator searches for his identity in a society that is ruled by white power structures. This thesis focuses on Fitzgerald’s characterization and criticism of the consumerism of the Roaring Twenties and on the themes of invisibility and racism in Invisible Man. Less
