Abstract
In this paper the analysis is made to trace the stages of quest myth defined by Joseph Campbell. Originally there are seventeen stages, while in Joseph Conrad’s Heart of Darkness are found eleven of these stages. They are the following: the call to adventure, supernatural aid, the crossing of the first threshold, the belly of the whale, the meeting of the goddess, the ultimate boon, refusal of return, magic flight, the crossing of the return threshold, master of the two worlds and freedom to... More live. The absence of a very important stage of apotheosis is also analyzed. The main idea of this paper is that there are two quests within each other. One is of Marlow who is narrator-protagonist in this novella. The other quest is Kurtz’s, the dark character whose quest is reflected through Marlow’s story. These two quests highlight and condition each other. The analysis of the elements of quest myth apparent in one or the other quest shows that the two quests in the end merge to create a universal wisdom. The aim of a quest is to obtain treasure, knowledge, or insight that helps the hero to overcome the usual difficulties of life. In Heart of Darkness the treasure gained through the quest is an insight Marlow gets through experiencing his own adventure while at the same time witnessing the Kurtz’s quest. This knowledge Marlow comes out with earns him the freedom to live an enriched life and to accept all aspects of human existence. Less
