Abstract
In the 18th century appeared an artistic movement that tried to revive the medieval Gothic architecture. This style of architecture became an inspiring setting for a series of novels about love stories surviving in the midst of horrifying environment and supernatural beings. They became known as Gothic novels. The elements of Gothic fiction developed further through the centuries and the author who made the development of Gothic fiction popular in modern times was the famous American writer Edgar Allan Poe, who reinterpreted Gothic fictions in a new way. His works were known as Gothic stories and they were also the first examples of detective prose. Poe’s most famous work, a poem "The Raven", is an example of his development of Gothic fiction in poetry. It is rich in Gothic imagery, motifs and style. This Gothic poem left a strong impression on the further development of horror and Gothic fiction, later spreading to other branches of art such as music and film.
