Abstract
This paper will be dealing with cognitive approach to language and its reseach of meaning through categories. There will be a short comparison between formal and functional approaches to language and their notions explained. The questions of existance of natural categories and the influence language has on one's thought processes will also be raised, along with the question of linguistic universalities caused by biological universalities. The categories of a profile, a base and a domain will be explained and their boundaries more specified through examples. Frames will also be traced back and the effect the society has on them, as well as their connection with profiles. The bottom- up apoproach will be applied on the terms of profile and base. The purpose of this work is to determine how to extract a profile from a base in less transparent examples and to determine which layer of language is based solely on our senses, and which is a result of experience.
