Abstract
The paper is an attempt to analyze and discuss the features of the Aesthetic Movement in English literature, as well as the concept of the duality of human nature, focusing on three works: Oscar Wilde's “The Importance of Being Earnest” (1986), Christopher Marlowe's “The Tragical History of Doctor Faustus” (1616) and Edgar Alan Poe’s “The Cask of Amontillado” (1846). As an important representative of aestheticism, a literary movement which argued that art should provide sensuous pleasure, rather than convey moral or sentimental messages, Oscar Wilde incorporated a great deal of this notion in his work. Some of the features resembling those of aestheticism can also be noticed in Poe’s “The Cask of Amontillado”, especially in the concept of carnival he introduces. However, “The Cask of Amontillado” is, above all, a story of the duality of human nature, and in its theme therefore quite similar to Marlowe’s “The Tragical History of Doctor Faustus”.
