Abstract
Hofmannsthal durchläuft drei Entwicklungsstufen bei seinem Weg zum Dichter. In erster Entwicklungsstufe entstehen Gedichte und kleine lyrische Dramen. In zweiter Entwicklungsstufe entstehen altgriechische Tragödien und musikalische Komödien. In der dritte Entwicklungsstufe versucht Hofmannsthal zu zeigen, dass die ewig gültigen Wahrheiten des Christentums allein imstande sind, das Streben der Menschen nach festen sittlichen Geboten zu befriedigen. Die griechischen Dramen sind Elektra (1903), Ödipus und die Sphinx (1906) und König Ödipus (1909). Hier werden griechischen Dramen nacherzählt und es wird gezeigt ob Hofmannsthal Sophoklos Dramen treu geblieben ist.
