Abstract
This paper is a study of specific issues encountered in the process of translation of two legislative documents: a decision belonging to the body of Croatian legislation into English and a communication belonging to the body of the acquis communautaire into Croatian. The aim of the paper is not to investigate the whole corpus of Croatian and European Union legislation, but to use this body as well as other designated sources of translation aid as a reference in the search for solutions to specific problems. The paper answers the following questions: What are the prerequisites for legal translation? What should a translator expect when faced with a translation of this type, from this particular field? What type of issues might occur and how to solve them? How to avoid translation errors? What are the most helpful translation tools and other sources of reference? Note however, that this research is not based on a corpus big enough to establish general rules about legal translation issues, but comprises personal conclusions and solutions for guidance rather than instructions.
