Abstract
This study aims to establish the differences between two generations of EFL learners in the use of vocabulary learning strategies (VLS). It focuses on discovering which types of VLS are used more by 2011 generation when compared to the types of strategies used by the 2003 generation. Specific examples of VLS will also be examined in detail. The factors assumed to influence the new generation could be attributed to the implementation of the new curriculum that emphasises helping learners to “learn how to learn”. The differences may be explained by the fact that the 2011 generation has been learning English since their first grade, unlike the 2003 generation.
Abstract (croatian)
Cilj je ovoga istraživanja utvrditi postoje li razlike između dviju generacija učenika engleskoga kao stranoga jezika u uporabi strategija učenja vokabulara. Ispituje se kojim se vrstama strategija koristi više generacija iz 2011. u usporedbi s generacijom iz 2003. Također se detaljno istražuje i o kojim se specifičnim strategijama radi unutar svake skupine. Čimbenici koji su vjerojatno utjecali na generaciju iz 2011. su uvođenje novoga nacionalnoga plana i programa u kojem je naglašena pomoć učenicima u “učenju kako učiti”, zajedno s činjenicom da se engleski uči od prvoga razreda, za razliku od generacije iz 2003.
