Abstract
This paper focuses on the screen translation of slang. It attempts to define slang, and give an insight into various aspects of it. In order to fully understand the nature of slang and its background it is necessary to give a historic overview and to explain functions that slang has in a language. There are various reasons why people use slang, and those can be divided into personal or social. When it comes to translation, there are several methods used to help us solve translation problems. On the basis of the presented information, the paper provides an analysis of slang in screen translation. The analysis is based on the film Juno, and it gives a comparison of the original text and the translation through various subtitling strategies. Subtitling is a challenging task, because it is not easy to get the intended reaction with the target text audience, and slang makes it even more difficult. Furthermore, there are many cultural differences and technical constraints. Even though subtitling is often a target of positive or negative criticism, I expressed my personal opinion about the quality of translation that was offered in the film.
