Abstract
This paper focuses on the major themes and symbolism notable in J. D. Salinger’s two most significant works, The Catcher in the Rye and Franny and Zooey, and the influence of the author’s personal life on the choice and use of said themes and symbols through the growth of particular protagonists, namely Holden Caulfield, Franny, and Zooey Glass. Upon recognition of themes Salinger commonly addresses, such as religion, innocence, search of identity, and phoniness, it is possible and of utter importance to understand the said issues through the symbolism he uses in the form of teachings, such as the Zen prayer Franny learns, places, represented by the carrousel in the closing scene of The Catcher in the Rye, objects, like Holden’s well-known red hunting hat, and persons, such as Holden’s spiritual ‘‘soulmate’’ James Castle. In that way the themes Salinger explores are realized through the abundance of symbolic imagery.
