Abstract
Cilj ovog rada je ispitati primjenjivost postavki teorije kognitivne disonance na ponašanje članova grupe sudnjeg dana „Family Radio”. Grupa je praćena od lipnja 2011. do ožujka 2012., a podatci su prikupljani iz različitih izvora, prvenstveno sa web stranice grupe Family Radio te yahoo grupe TimeandJudgment_May212011. Ovaj rad je deskriptivna studija slučaja, što znači da pokušava opisati činitelje koji su ključni za djelovanje grupe „Family Radio”, a pri analizi podataka smo se oslanjali na teoretske pretpostavke teorije kognitivne disonance. Prema navedenoj teoriji, nakon diskonfirmacije, članovi grupe trebali bi pojačati propagandne aktivnosti i pokušaje pridobivanja novih članova. Prikupljeni podatci organizirani su prema uvjetima koje Festinger smatra nužnim za manifestiranje takvog ishoda diskonfirmacije; navedeno je koja ponašanja se očekuju te primjeri opaženih ponašanja kod članova grupe „Family Radio”. Utvrdili smo da grupa ostvaruje uvjete nužne za manifestaciju takve reakcije na diskonfirmaciju, no nisu primijećena ponašanja u prilog hipotezi. Čini se kako je reinterpretacija glavna taktika pri suočavanju s disonancom u ovom slučaju. Postavlja se pitanje usporedivosti „modernih” grupa s onim prije proučavanim, posebno s obzirom na kohezivnost i kvalitetu socijalne podrške u kontekstu modernih načina komunikacije.
Abstract (english)
The aim of this study was to examine the applicability of cognitive dissonance theory on the behavior of members of the doomsday group „FamilyRadio”. The group was followed from June 2011 till March 2012, and data was collected from various sources, primarily from group's webpage and yahoo group TimeandJudgment_ May212011. This paper is a descriptive case study, it is trying to describe factors that are crucial for the actions of the group „Family Radio”. In data analysis, we relied on the theoretical assumptions of the cognitive dissonance theory. According to the theory, after disconfirmation, group members should strengthen propaganda activities and attempts to win new members. Data that had been collected was organized according to the conditions that Festinger considered necessary for the manifestation of such an outcome; expected behavior was compared with observed behavior and examples were given. Although, group did satisfied necessary conditions, observed behavior was not in support of hypothesis. It seems that, in this case, reinterpretation was the main method of dealing with the dissonance. We can question comparability of „modern” group with those studied before, particularly considering cohesiveness and quality of social support in the context of modern modes of communication.
