Abstract
This paper attempts to determine and classify conceptual metaphors whose concepts deal with the economy, the economic processes and the global financial crisis in the English and Croatian corpora. The approach to metaphor is mainly cognitive linguistic: metaphors were identified using broad criterion that the domain A is rendered in terms of the domain B which served as the universal category in order to conduct the vertical contrastive analysis. The metaphors are grouped in seven clusters defined by the conceptual mappings that have already been found to structure the socio-economic discourse. The second focus of this paper was to sub-categorize the generic-level metaphors with the aim to explore cultural variation between English and Croatian in structuring and using conceptual metaphors. The total of 168 conceptual metaphors provides a basis for some generalizations to be made regarding differences, similarities and distribution of conceptual metaphors in the socio-economic discourse.
